Republic Government

After overthrowing their Etruscan conquerers in 509 BC, the Romans established a republic government where citizens choose representatives to rule. The Roman Republic has several different posistions: Consul, Senator, Plebian Council (People's Assembly), Tribunes, Governor, Aedile, and Censor. The Consul is at the top of the Roman Republic. To keep them from becoming to powerful , 2 consuls were always elected and they only served 1 year-long term. If the consuls came upon a disagreement, they were able to veto each other. The consuls also decided when to go to war, how much taxes to collect, and what the laws were. After the consul is the Senator. The Senator guides the consul and the consul usually does what they recommend. Also, the senator serves for life. After the Senator is the Plebian Council. The Plebian Council is used when Plebians elect their leaders, magistates, pass laws, and hold court. After the Plebian Council are Tribunes. Tribunes are representatives of Plebians. They were able to reject laws made by Senate, especially those against Plebians. After Tribunes is Governor. The governor was chosen by the Senator and they ruled conquered land. They also controlled the local Roman army and were in charge of collecting taxes. After the Governor is Aedile. The Aedile was a city official that was in charge of the maintenance of public building and public festivals. Coming after the Aedile is the Censor. The censor counted how many citizens Rome had. They also kept track of the census.
